This large serving tray by Ōhi Chōzaemon XI (Toshio) brings together the rich glaze tradition of Ōhi ware and a distinctly contemporary sculptural form. Its broad rectangular surface is covered in luminous amber glaze, deepening into reddish brown and framed at either end by lustrous black. Shallow parallel channels articulate the interior, while gently rising corners and an irregular, freely worked rim give the piece considerable movement. The contrast between the glossy surface and the uneven edges preserves a strong sense of the clay and the artist’s hand.
Born in Kanazawa in 1958, the eldest son of Ōhi Chōzaemon X, Toshio succeeded to the family name in 2016, becoming the eleventh generation to carry forward a pottery tradition established in 1666. Closely associated with Raku ceramics and the Urasenke school of tea, Ōhi ware has long been distinguished by its hand-formed vessels and characteristic amber glaze. Toshio’s training within the family workshop, together with a Master of Fine Arts from Boston University and extensive international collaborations, has given his work a perspective extending well beyond traditional tea ceramics. His pieces are held in collections worldwide, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Musée Ariana in Geneva, and the Sèvres ceramics museum in France.
In excellent condition, the tray measures 13.4 inches long, 8.7 inches wide, and 2.6 inches high (34 × 22 × 6.5 cm). It bears the artist’s impressed seal on the underside and comes with its original wooden box, signed and stamped by Toshio, together with its accompanying wrapping cloth and biographical literature. A substantial and visually compelling work, equally effective as a serving piece or displayed as an example of contemporary Japanese ceramics.
