A 17th–18th Century Korean Tea Bowl with Gohon Firing and Notched Foot

Early Edo
Price:
$2,250

Here we see a quietly beautiful Korean tea bowl with a rounded, gently tapering form and a tall, dramatically notched foot. A translucent blue-grey glaze covers the surface, enlivened by soft clouds of salmon and peach—the atmospheric kiln effect known in Japan as gohon. Four kiln-support marks surround the central well, providing a striking focal point within the otherwise restrained interior. Subtle throwing lines, pinholes and irregularities in the glaze give the bowl a wonderfully natural and uncontrived character.

Korean ceramics such as this were deeply admired in Japan, where their simplicity and accidental beauty became closely associated with the developing aesthetics of wabi-cha. The divided foot, warm reddish clay and softly mottled glaze are all characteristics that Japanese tea practitioners found particularly appealing. Once brought to Japan, bowls of this type were often carefully preserved and elevated from ordinary Korean vessels into highly valued individual works of tea art.

In fine antique condition, the bowl measures 13.5cm across and stands 9cm tall. It comes with an old Japanese lacquered storage box, a brocade drawstring shifuku and a textile wrapping cloth, all assembled in Japan by a former chajin owner. A wooden tag on the drawstrings reads 御物 meaning in this case "treasured item" and a small label on the side of the box reads 古高麗 meaning "very old Korean-ware."
