An austere masterpiece of functional art — the perfect accompaniment on the journey inward to stillness and contemplation. Crafted by the 9th Ōhi Chōzaimon (1901-1986), it is surely one of his best pieces and has the endorsement of the 14th Grand Tea Master of Urasenke — Tantan-sai (1893–1964), who, along with his endorsement gave this piece the poetic name "Karamatsu" or “Golden Larch,” often associated with the season of late autumn, mountain air, transience, and brilliant transformation.
The craftsman who fashioned this piece, the 9th Ohi Chozaimon (1901-1986), is the most widely recognized and most accomplished of the now 11 generations of Ohi potters. Born in Ishikawa Prefecture at the start of the 20th century, he took up the family craft and, at the age of 26, became head potter of the Ohi kiln. Raku tea bowls made by Ohi 9 are some of the finest you will encounter, comparing favorably to even tea bowls made by the main Raku lineage in Kyoto (now in its 16th generation). The lightness of the clay, the soft silky textures of the glaze, and the mastery of form are all signatures of a lifetime of excellence backed by generations of experience.
In excellent condition, this piece is 4.5 inches in diameter (11.5 cm) and stands 3.2 inches tall (8 cm). It comes with its original wood box bearing Ohi IX’s signature, an exceptionally nice decorative silk pouch (shifuku), and the Ohi seal clearly visible on the base of the tea bowl. As mentioned above, it also has the rare distinction of being endorsed by Tantan-sai, former Head Tea Master of Urasenke and granted the poetic name Karamatsu.
