A stunning pair of Wajima-nuri lacquer lidded bowls; each formed with a compact rounded body and fitted cover and with a surface finished in a deep, contemplative red lacquer with a warm, understated presence. The bowls are small and intimate in scale, likely intended for kaiseki styles such as suimono, kuzu-wan, or another seasonal covered dish. Perfect both as display items to liven up a space and to bring a sense of depth and intimacy; as well as for careful use in delicate and refined Japanese culinary pursuits.
The artist who crafted these fine pieces, Kado Yui, (b. 1968) is a contemporary lacquer artist working within the distinguished Wajima lacquer tradition of Ishikawa Prefecture. Son of the celebrated lacquer artist Kado Isaburō — a major modern figure known for his powerful and deeply personal interpretations of Wajima-nuri and for his revival of bold functional lacquer forms — Yui, by contrast seems to gravitate more towards the delicate, the refined, and the intimate. His work belongs to the living world of Japanese lacquer: objects made not merely for viewing, but for touch, service, and seasonal ceremony. In this way, like many other pieces featured in our gallery, they fall under the category of “functional artwork.”
In very good vintage condition, each bowl measures approximately 3.5 inches high with the lid closed (9cm) and 3.3 inches across (8.5cm). They each come with their own fitted box and are signed on the base by the artist.
