We have a particular interest in beautiful Raku tea bowls and spend quite a bit of time searching for exceptional examples to include in our gallery. Here we see a beautiful work that appears to be contemporary (within the past 25 years) and crafted to a high standard. The shape and glaze are extraordinary giving a sense of groundedness and quiet confidence. The shape is known as han-tsutsu and is best for autumn going into the winter months; though can be used all year round. Depending on the light, the color can shift quite a lot; turning more of a reddish color in bright light and darker in, lower lighting conditions. On the base there is a clear potters mark, however, after extensive searching we were unable to definitively identify this clearly talented potter.
A tradition dating from the mid-16th century, Raku tea bowls are fashioned primarily by hand giving them a distinctly human feel. Prized for their soft contours, subtle asymmetry, and richly expressive surfaces; Raku is one of the most celebrated traditions in Japanese ceramics—often associated with tea ceremony and the aesthetics of intimacy, irregularity, and stillness. The piece featured here is an excellent example perfect for enthusiasts of the aesthetic and tea practitioners alike.
In excellent condition, this piece measures 4 inches in diameter (10cm) and stands 3.2 inches tall (8cm). Though not furnished with a box, it comes wrapped in a beautiful antique wrapping cloth.
