Oribe is a visual style named after the late-16th-century tea master Furuta Oribe (1544-1615). Typically, black or green glazes are applied to the bodies of these works and light-colored windows are created using feldspar. These high-contrast areas then act as a canvas upon which abstract, minimalistic, and often naturalistic themes are painted. Rather than striving for perfect regularity, Oribe embraces irregular silhouettes, playful distortion, and a spirited freedom of expression that reflect the changing tastes of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The result is pottery of remarkable visual energy, at once rustic and sophisticated, whose freshness and originality continue to make it one of the most admired traditions in Japanese ceramics.
Normally, we try to only include pieces in our gallery with known origins, artists, and with good documentation. However, on occasion we do find pieces that just jump out at us although they cannot be attributed to a specific artist or kiln. We found this piece quite charming and, due to its uniqueness, attractiveness, and quality, decided to include it along with our other various artworks of known origin. Although there is no way to reliably date this piece, we believe it to be rather old and would place it in the early to middle Edo period, approximately 300-400 years old. An extraordinary artwork, likely made by a great artist, now lost to time.
In fine antique condition, this piece is 6 inches wide (15cm) and stands 5.5 inches tall (14cm). Though there in no box for storage, we have furnished it with a fine antique wrapping cloth (not shown here).
*** International shipping and insurance is included in the price.
