Like many pottery traditions in Japan, Karatsu takes its name from the city where it originated. As early as the 15th century, Korean potters heavily influenced the development of this form—helping to endow it with the earthy, simple, and natural qualities it is so appreciated for. This particular piece has minimalistic paintings in ferrous pigment and the distinction of a rare and interesting gold repair known as maki-e. As you can see it is quite attractive and a very involved and difficult repair to make. While not necessarily true in all cases; in this one the overall composition is greatly enhanced by the application of this delicate and time-honored tradition.
In fine antique condition, this piece is 6 inches at its wides point (15cm) and stands 2.1 inches tall (5.2cm). It comes with a wood box that appears to have been furnished sometime in the last 50-100 years, and a patterned wrapping cloth.
