A decidedly modern and innovative take on the classic Shino trope, this “kataguchi” or one-sided pouring vessel lends an air of depth, contemplation, and brilliance to your sake drinking experience. Perfect for sake enthusiasts or collectors of fine Japanese ceramics alike; a one-of-a-kind piece resting on the back of hundreds of years of tradition, exploration, and experimentation.
A rather ubiquitous name within the world of Japanese ceramics, Suzuki’s of various stripes hold positions of reverence within a number of Japan’s potting traditions. In the case of this rather young and upcoming artist, true to his name, we see an extraordinary level of technical competence as well as innovation in form, material, and execution. Born in Tokyo in 1984, Suzuki Shu felt the pull to dig his hands in the earth from a young age. This pastime culminated in an interest in ancient pottery; so much so in fact that he took it upon himself to visit a number of historic kiln sites in the Mino region. At the age of 16, he moved there and several years later graduated from the Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Technical School. Among the various traditions germane to Mino potting, Shu chose Shino as his main passion and, as is demonstrated here, achieved extraordinary results—producing pieces with deep reds, graphite highlights, a noticeable downplay of the traditional inclusion of feldspar, and pieces with a decidedly modern feel to them, bordering on the avant-garde.
In excellent condition this piece is 5.7 inches across at its widest point (14.5 cm), and stands 3 inches tall (7.5 cm). It comes with its original wood box signed and sealed by the artist (tomobako), a protective cloth, and an informational insert written in Japanese detailing the artist and the kiln.
