One family of artists that has left a lasting mark on not just Kyoto but on the world at large has been the Ōgata family. Prominent among this line - Ōgata Kenzan, son of Sōken and younger brother to the famous painter Kōrin. Renown in the late 17th early 18th Century for their revolutionary motifs, their design philosophies would inspire later generations and untold legions of artists, right down to the present day. Though Kenzan did not have a formal apprentice, there were others after him that took up his design principles and went by his name. The set of serving dishes seen here is by the third generation in this line, contemporary to two other potting traditions heavily influenced by the Ōgata family, the Dōhachi’s, and the Yohei’s (see attached lineage chart).
Crafted from the finest Kyoto porcelain in the fashion of Kyo-ware of the time (18th C), these hand-crafted and hand-painted serving “mukozuke” were lovingly restored by our very talented artisan who painstakingly repaired chips along the upper rim of several dishes. They are thus in excellent restored condition with each piece in the set being 3.5 inches wide (9cm) and standing 2.4 inches tall (6cm). They come with a certification box provided by 20th Century scholar Katsura Matasaburo, an expert on the old kilns of Bizen and on historical Japanese pottery in general, having published numerous volumes on the subject.
