An Eye-Catching Red “Gong-yu” Tenmoku Tea Bowl

Artist:

Era:

Price:
$875

On the base of this tea bowl are the characters “供御” pronounced “Ku-go” in Japanese but “Gong-yu” in the original Chinese—translating in English to something like “Food and drink of the Emperor/ Shogun.” These bowls first appeared in the early Song Dynasty in the Jiang kilns and, as the name suggests, were reserved for high-ranking nobility. Typically featuring rather dark clay and dark glazes with a characteristic Hare’s fur patterning; very old pieces will often have slight imperfections and asymmetries. Rather thick in construction, they have been praised down through history for their fine construction and, in Japan, for their suitability in drinking whisked tea—as the dark glazes contrast nicely with powdered green teas. The piece shown here may be of Chinese origin from a later historical period as many tenmoku tea bowls were produced for export or otherwise found their way to Japan over the centuries. It could also be from a Japanese kiln following in the Chinese tradition but adding a little extra flare with the application of this extraordinary red glaze that I have not seen on any similar pieces. Regardless of its origin, it is exceptionally eye-catching, unique, shows a bit of age, and is perfect for enjoying tea in any number of styles.

In very good condition with no chips or cracks, this piece is 5 inches in diameter (12.7 cm) and stands 2.9 inches tall (7.2 cm). Unboxed, it is slightly larger than your typical tenmoku tea bowl and surprisingly sturdy and grounded in its construction. The silver ring along the upper rim contrasts nicely with the glaze, overall a very striking composition. *** International shipping and insurance is included in the price.
