As can be seen from the attached images, especially beautiful in natural light; this charming vase features contoured ridges encircling the exterior while rivulets of deep green Oribe glaze drip down its sides. Catching the light at the right angle, rainbows of color shimmer on its surface and the unglazed base reveals the iron-rich clay this piece is fashioned from. An artist we deeply admire, you can find several other pieces by Tamaoki listed among our gallery pages.

Born in 1941 in Taijima, Tamaoki began his studies at a very early age; apprenticing for a time under Kato Kohei V before eventually opening his own kiln. He exhibited widely, entering his pieces in competition whenever the opportunity arose and, as a result, has a list of awards to his name at top competitions and was eventually named an Intangible Cultural Asset of Taijimi City in 1991. An overview of his body of work shows Tamaoki’s unmatched ability to drive his craft forward by innovating on tradition while, at the same time, being able to produce works indistinguishable from those produced hundreds of years prior.

This exceptional vase is 9 inches at its widest point (23cm) and stands 9 inches tall (23cm). It comes in its original box signed and sealed with the artist’s stamp under the lid and the vase bears Tamaoki’s signature on its base.
