Oribe is a visual style named after the late-16th-century tea master Furuta Oribe (1544-1615). Typically, black or green glazes are applied to the bodies of these works and light-colored windows are created using feldspar. These high-contrast areas then act as a canvas upon which abstract, minimalistic, and often naturalistic themes are painted. This piece is quite unique in that, rather than the typical design, it displays a dark ferrous glaze with feldspar rings encircling the vessel. In addition, while it has the typical distorted and exaggerated "kutsugata" shape these pieces are prized for, this one is somewhat more petite than the typical Oribe bowl from this period.
In fine antique condition, this Oribe bowl is 5 inches at its widest point ( 12.5 cm) and stands 3 inches tall ( 8 cm). Unique and aesthetically pleasing, it comes comes with a protective drawstring pouch (shifuku) and fits well inside the furnished wood box that it is housed in.
