A stunning example of blue/ green Oribe-ware by one of the veterans of Mino ceramics, this platter displays astounding variation in color and texture with deep forest greens, aquamarine coral blues, sandy browns, and dark contrast areas that add depth to the overall composition. Rather weighty compared to other Oribe pieces of this type, it has a very solid grounding presence and draws attention while not overwhelming the senses. A pleasure to use as a functional serving tray or simply as a display object to liven up a space.
Born in 1941 in Taijima, Tamaoki began his studies at a very early age; apprenticing for a time under Kato Kohei V before eventually opening his own kiln. He exhibited widely, entering his pieces in competition whenever the opportunity arose and, as a result, has a list of awards to his name at top competitions and was eventually named an Intangible Cultural Asset of Taijimi City in 1991. An overview of his body of work shows Tamaoki’s unmatched ability to drive his craft forward by innovating on tradition while, at the same time, being able to produce works indistinguishable from those produced hundreds of years prior.
In perfect condition, this large Oribe platter is 17.3 inches in length (44cm), 10 inches in width (25cm), and stands 3 inches tall at its highest point (7.5cm). It comes with its original box signed and stamped byYasuo and the platter itself bears his signature on the base. It comes with an informational insert in Japanese and its original wrapping cloth. In addition, included in the box is an exhibition card from the Gifu Prefecture Intangible Cultural Asset Commemorative Exhibition where this piece was entered in competition as one of Tamaoki's master works.
