An Excellent Edo Period Korean “Ido” Tea Bowl — Collector Piece

Artist:
—
Era:
Edo
Price:
$2,500

A very interesting chawan (tea bowl) dating from the Korean Joseon period (Richō in Japanese; 1392-1897). This particular piece appears to be from the 17th or 18th century (though could be much older) and comes with a box that looks to have been furnished within the last 50-100 years. In addition this appears to be a collector piece as it also has an outer lacquer decorative box, indicating someone took much time and expense to preserve this exceptional tea bowl for posterity, likely a collector of antiquities or a tea person. Over the long history of tea practice in Japan, at varying times, Korean-ware came into high fashion and ships full of the finest ceramics were brought over to Japan. Such pieces have long been favored by learned cha-jin (tea people) and older pieces such as this are quite prized today as relatively few from this era have survived intact.

This piece displays an ash glaze that produces a granulated pattern on the surface of the ceramic vessel; with results ranging from smooth to rough and crackled in appearance. The shape is the classic Ido-shape, or “well” shape style and this particular piece uses a glaze with a very faint pinkish tinge, with colors ranging from faint charcoal to ivory, to salmon. Overall somewhat demure in appearance yet somehow radiating a type of austere presence that is admired by students of tea ceremony.

In fine antique condition with no visible chips or cracks, this piece is 5.3 inches in diameter (13.5 cm) and stands 3.2 inches tall (8 cm). It comes in an antique wood box with the characters 朝鮮 (Chōsen) 李朝 (Richō) 井戸 (Ido) and 茶碗 (Chawan) stenciled on the lid and on the side of the box. In addition, there are hand-written notes inside the box with the same information as written on the box lid. Finally, there is a beautiful antique wrapping cloth that compliments the set perfectly. ** International shipping and insurance included in price.
