Displaying a bold Oribe glaze and sweeping comb pattern culminating in a dynamic vortex, this wonderful platter is the result of years of trial and error by one of Japan’s most lauded ceramic artists of the 20th century. Awarded the title of Living National Treasure for a lifetime of innovation, advocacy, and creative expression, Suzuki’s pieces stand as a lasting testament to his artistic genius. This platter in particular would make an impactful addition to any serious collection of Japanese ceramics from the 20th century and would be a centerpiece for a collection of Oribe pottery from this period.
Suzuki Osamu (b. December 1st, 1934, Toki City, Gifu Prefecture) is a Japanese ceramist and Living National Treasure (Ningen Kokuhō) celebrated for his mastery of Shino ware (Shino-yaki). Born into a family steeped in ceramics — his father was a glaze researcher at the Gifu Prefectural Ceramics Testing Center — he trained under masters including Arakawa Toyozō and spent years studying Momoyama-period kiln ruins to reconstruct ancient firing techniques. After winning the Grand Prix at the 1962 International Ceramics Exhibition in Czechoslovakia, he established his own studio in 1968, building a custom gas kiln modeled on historic anagama kilns to develop a bold, contemporary reinterpretation of the Shino tradition. Apart from Shino, Osamu is also known for his dramatic copper green Oribe glazes, as seen here, and his deep lustrous Seto-guro glazes. Highly acclaimed, he received the Japan Ceramics Society Gold Prize (1982), the Minister of Education Award for Fine Arts (1987), and in 1994 was designated a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property for Shino ware. Further honors include the Purple Ribbon Medal (1995), the Order of the Rising Sun (2006), and recognition as a Person of Cultural Merit in 2024; some of the highest honors bestowed in all of Japan.
In perfect condition, this large Oribe platter is 17inches in length (43cm), 9.5 inches in width (24cm), and stands 2.3 inches tall at its highest point (6cm). It comes with its original box signed and stamped by Osamu and the platter itself bears his signature on the base.
