The craftsman, 3rd generation Kawase Hyokan (b. 1964) was born in San Francisco in the US but was raised and taught the traditional craft of lacquer-work in Kyoto, the cultural heart of Japan. Taught primarily by his father and graduating from several art and craft related courses of study including the Kyoto College of Art and Design, in 1991 Kawase submitted his first entry to the prestigious Kyoten Exhibition. Later in 2003, he was certified as an official traditional Kyoto lacquer craftsman by the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry; a title bestowed only to those of a high caliber. Subsequently, in 2007, he officially took over the title of head artisan, becoming the 3rd generational craftsman of his family line stretching back over 100 years. Since that time, Kawase has exhibited widely at a number of prestigious venues while also being active in a number of traditional associations and academic groups.
