During the Meiji period in Japan, the humble iron kettle, known as a "tetsubin," emerged as an iconic symbol of traditional craftsmanship and functional artistry. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail and often adorned with intricate designs—as can be seen here with a cherry blossom motif and a what appears to be a pine-cone for a gripper—they became an essential tool in the Japanese tea ceremony. These kettles were prized not only for their practicality in boiling water but also for their aesthetic appeal and cultural significance. Each tetsubin bore the hallmark of its maker, with some artisans achieving widespread acclaim for their exceptional skill and creativity. Today, Meiji-period tetsubin are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike, revered as timeless examples of Japanese artistry and cultural heritage.
In fine antique condition with some tarnish and rust characteristic of such pieces, this tea kettle is 7.5inches at its wides point (19cm) and stands 7.9 inches tall including the handle (20cm).
