Oribe is a visual style named after the late-16th-century tea master Furuta Oribe (1544-1615). Typically, black or green glazes are applied to the bodies of these works and light-colored windows are created using feldspar. These high-contrast areas then act as a canvas upon which abstract, minimalistic, and often naturalistic themes are painted.

As can be seen here, this piece is of the green variety and looks to be from the mid-to-early Edo period as can be determined from a number of factors including the coloration of the clay on the base of the tea bowl, an oil sheen effect on the green glaze that typically only develops after hundreds of years, and the overall appearance of the glaze. Typical of Mino pieces of the time it is made of coarse, unrefined clay and has a distorted and exaggerated "kutsugata" shape which is in stark contrast to many other potting traditions in Japan that tend towards more regular and orthodox forms. An especially beautiful composition, the front and back of the bowl are decorated with minimalistic designs and the clay body has taken on a nice patina from several hundreds of years of use. An irreproducible treasure from history.

In fine antique condition, this tea bowl is 5.1 inches in diameter (13 cm) and stands 2.75 inches tall (7 cm). The wood box it is housed in looks to have been furnished some time ago, likely late Edo, so over 200 years ago. There is a potters mark, however, rather indistinguishable, so the crafter is unknown as of this writing. ***International shipping and insurance is included in the price.
