A mesmerizing piece of ceramic art, this exquisite tenmoku tea bowl embodies the rich traditions of Japanese craftsmanship that are inspired by over a millennia of Chinese artistry. With its distinctive deep red glaze, reminiscent of brilliant sunsets, red chili peppers, and festival colors; its presence creates an enchanting visual allure. The bowl's form is elegantly simple, with a gently flared rim that invites contemplation. Crafted with precision and care, this piece reflects the mastery of the potter with his nearly seven decades of experience. In addition, it showcases his unique use of clay and glaze, resulting in a surface both smooth to the touch and visually dynamic.

Kimura (b. 1935) has had a long and industrious career as a potter too voluminous to detail here in its entirety though we can provide you a broad outline. A native of Kyoto, he graduated in 1957 from the Kyoto City Crafts Institute with a specialization in pottery and ceramics artisanship. Setting up shop at the family kiln in the illustrious Gojo-zaka potting district, he proceeded to make tea-ware pieces of an exceptionally high caliber; particularly those in the Classical Chinese tenmoku form. Exhibiting widely across Japan and winning a number of awards, in 1986 he began introducing his pieces in competition and exhibition abroad when he held his first foreign exhibition at the Taiwan National Palace Museum where his pieces are now part of their permanent collection. Later he would also have pieces represented by the Boston Museum of Fine Art, the Douglas Museum of Natural and Cultural History, and the Houston Museum of Fine Art. In addition, he now has pieces as part of the permanent collections of the British Museum and the Harvard University Museum as well as a number of museums across Japan. In 2005 Kimura won the Kyoto Prefecture Cultural Merit Award for his years of dedication to his craft and his unmatched level of technical accomplishment and artistry.
