Ōhi Chōzaemon X

When the founder of the Urasenke style of tea ceremony, Sen-So Soshitsu (1622 -1697) was invited to Kanazawa as the master of tea ceremony for the powerful Kaga lords in 1666, the first Chōzaemon came with him and established Ōhi-yaki in Kanazawa. Chōzaemon had been the chief apprentice to the Raku family in Kyoto and took with him many of the principles and ideas associated with Raku-ware. Since those auspicious beginnings, Ōhi-ware has held a high place in the world of tea ceremony and, outside of pieces made by the 16th generational Raku family in Kyoto, you will not find a longer enduring tradition of Raku production and pieces crafted to such a high standard.

Born in 1927, the son of the 9th Chozaemon, Ōhi 10 took up the generational calling and, from a young age continued producing some of the most sought after ceremonial tea ware in Japan. In 1949 he graduated from Tokyo University for the Arts and returned to the family kiln. Working quite actively in the private and educational sectors, he has taught at a number of prestigious institutions and has worked to spread awareness of his craft by actively exhibiting both in Japan and abroad. In 1987 he was formally named head of the kiln and, after a nearly 30 year run, stepped down in 2016 to make way for his son who then became the 11th generational Ōhi potter. Recently departing us, no more masterpieces by this top artist will be produced, making all remaining works a record of his contribution to the cultural legacy. Today his pieces are held in collections and museums around the world including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo; the Taiwan College of Arts; the Museum of Fine Arts of Nancy in France; and, a number of pieces are held by the Imperial household that were gifted upon receiving the Order of Cultural Merit from the Emperor, one of the most prestigious awards in Japan.

Reportedly new and never used, this piece is 5 inches in diameter (12.5cm) and stands 3.5 inches tall (8.9 cm). It comes with its original wood box bearing Ōhi X’s signature and stamp, a protective wrapping cloth, and the Ōhi seal clearly visible on the base of the tea bowl. In addition, there are two inserts in the box detailing the kiln and its history and a price card from the gallery where this piece previously resided. At the time it was listed for approximately $5,000 making this rather good value. *** International shipping and insurance included in the price. ***
