Intricately carved clay adorned with a complex and multi-layer Oribe glaze, this piece is one of the best I have encountered by this talented and multifaceted artist. Though Oribe dates back to the 15th century, Tsukamoto has managed to keep it fresh and engaging for his many fans.
A native of the city of Toki in Gifu Prefecture, from 1977 he studied under Harukiyo Nonaka and was trained in the techniques of Shino ware. A year later he graduated from Aichi Prefectural Seto Ceramics Vocational Training School and two years after that from Tajimi City Ceramic Design Institute. In 1986 he opened his own kiln known as Hokuto-gama and has continued to produce high-quality pieces in a number of styles, all with his unique flair and decidedly modern feel. Over the course of his long career, Tsukamoto has received a number of prestigious awards, honors, and titles, including winner of the Grand Prix at the 34th Asahi Ceramics Exhibition.
In excellent condition this tea bowl is 5 inches in diameter at its widest point (12.5cm), and stands 3.1 inches tall (8cm). Although it comes in a box that is not the original, it is unmistakably a work by Tsukamoto with his signature clearly visible on the base of the tea bowl and debatably one of his finest pieces. *** International shipping & Insurance included in price.
