The large characters in the center of this scroll "南無妙法蓮華経" are pronounced as "Namu Myōho Renge Kyō” in English — a phrase associated with Nichiren Buddhism that is often recited as a mantra, expressing devotion to the Lotus Sutra. This sutra is one of the main tenants of Nichiren and is thought by devotees to be the ultimate law and truth of the universe. Commissioned in 1690, this scroll commemorates the reconstruction of the main hall of Ryuhon-ji Temple, established in the year 1321. Originally known as Myōken-ji, the temple underwent a number of reconstructions and relocations, once, for example, upon its decimation by a rival sect of monks residing on Hiesan, and, another time due to a devastating fire that razed much of Kyoto.
The scroll was painted by a monk known as Nichiko (1645-1721) and on the back is an inscription (written in 1759) by another monk known as Nichigen who certifies it as being authentic and gives details of the kaimyo (after death name) given to Nichiko after his passing.
In fine antique condition, this scroll is 18.5 inches wide (47cm) and stands 62 inches tall (157cm). It comes in its original period wood box with labels bearing the Lotus Sutra affixed to the top and side. A detailed transcription and translation is available upon purchase.
