A testament to the brilliance of traditional Japanese craftsmanship, this lacquered mizusashi—skillfully handcrafted from bamboo—showcases a deep crimson hue that radiates warmth and sophistication. Its seamless design and flawless finish reflect the skilled hands of the first generation artisan who crafted it, achieving a harmonious balance between form and function. Designed for use in Japanese tea ceremony, this indispensable implement would love to be put back into service or just to be admired for its sheer beauty.
The craftsman, first generation Murase Jihei was born in 1897 (Meiji 30) into a family of woodworkers, thus carrying his lineage into the fifth generation. Over time it became apparent he possessed exceptional skills, especially in crafting very thinly planed sheets of wood, even to the point where they were transparent. Mastering the art of woodworking he decided to branch out and began to create finished products as lacquerware. It was about this time he came into the service of the preeminent Japanese artist Kitaōji Rosanjin (1883-1959) who, along with the owner of a restaurant Rosanjin was heavily involved in, Sugihara Yasuyoshi, presented Jihei with an old "Hideyoshi wan" (a type of tea bowl) and asked him if he could reproduce it. However, upon seeing the simple and elegant design, Jihei replied, "I cannot replicate something this exquisite.” His response touched the hearts of Rosanjin and Yasuyoshi, who asked Jihei to create a Hideyoshi wan for them regardless. During the work, Rosanjin frequently visited Jihei's studio and provided detailed guidance, standing right beside him. As a result, a Hideyoshi wan with a robust wooden body, vigorous lacquer painting, and gold leaf accents was born. Today the Murase Jihei line is in its 3rd generation and is widely recognized for making pieces of unmatched character and depth.
In perfect condition, this red lacquer mizusashi is 5.1 inches at its widest point (13cm) and stands 9 inches tall (23cm). It comes with its original signed and sealed box and a protective wrapping cloth that also bears Murase’s seal.
