Simple, elegant, and functional, this Meiji period kyūsu (teapot) was crafted with precision and care by one of the periods most accomplished ceramicists. Showcasing refined beauty and delicate craftsmanship for which Japanese porcelain is renowned, its smooth and lustrous white glaze exudes an air of purity and simplicity. Most importantly, its ergonomic shape and comfortable grip, along with its clean lines and minimalist design, help contribute to a sense of tranquility and harmony—thus perfecting the tea experience.
The first of 5 legendary potters from Meiji to receive the honorary title of Imperial Court Artist, Seifū Yohei III (1851-1914) was not actually born into this well-known Kyoto potting family but rather adopted and apprenticed from the age of 15. Having originally come from a painting family of the Maruyama school and trained to some degree in this before taking over his role as potter, Seifū III distinguished himself not only through his proficiency at painting, but also by developing unique glazing techniques, employing intricate designs, and displaying an overall refined aesthetic sensibility. His voluminous works range from delicate tea-ware utensils and vases to larger-scale vessels, all displaying an inherent sense of beauty and craftsmanship—often showcasing delicate hand-painted motifs, refined forms, and a harmonious balance between simplicity and sophistication. Today his legacy lives on with his pieces being highly sought after and held in high-profile collections and museums around the world including the Tokyo National Museum, the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the National Museum of Scotland to name a few.
In fine antique condition, this piece in 4.15 inches at its widest point (10.5cm) and stands 3.15 inches tall (8cm). It comes with its original wood box signed and sealed by the artist. In addition, it comes with its original protective wrapping cloth also bearing the seal of this artist. Feel free to contact us for additional images or for examples of signatures and seals.
