A 17th Century e-Karatsu “Mukozuke” Serving Dish

A stylized grass motif painted in ferrous pigment across each side and on the inside of this mukozuke serving dish marks it as being more likely produced in Karatsu as opposed to having come out of a Mino kiln. Though very similar styles and techniques were utilized during the late 16th or early 17th C. when this would have been produced; the color, distribution of glaze, and patterning suggest Karatsu. While at one time this would have been part of a set of 5 pieces, very few sets survive intact in our current age and today it is most common to find individual pieces that have been given their own boxes for careful preservation. While overall in very good antique condition, if you look closely at the rim you can see that black lacquer has been applied to repair several chips. Over time the lacquer has eroded, adding a bit of character and also giving us more confidence in suggesting this piece would have been produced in or around early Edo. Standing 2.75 inches tall (7cm) and measuring 6 inches (15.2cm) at its widest point, this piece is rather unique in shape with all four corners curling in and turned upwards, suggesting the shape of a flower in bloom. Housed in an antique lacquer wood box, there is also a display cushion and antique patterned wrapping cloth.
