With an uncanny ability to emulate features of the natural environment, the creator of this sake vessel,Tsujimura Yui, is one of Japan’s most skilled potters working in the field today. With a breathtaking ash glaze that appears half planned and half left to the dictates of the kiln, we can see a number of textures and colors that one might encounter in a Zen garden or while hiking along a mountain brook. The front of the vessel is adorned with an “enso,” however, unlike the traditional motif you see across the spectrum of Japanese art, this one seems to be almost growing out of the sake flask rather than having been placed there intentionally. This is very fitting as it is meant to symbolize the eternal, the nothingness, and the freedom of the mind to envision and to create.

Born in Nara, Japan, in 1975, the eldest son of potting legend Tsujimura Shiro, Yui was immersed in the craft practically from birth. Like his father, he found much inspiration in ancient potting styles, especially those of the Heian and Momoyama periods defined by thick construction, an aesthetic tending towards asymmetrical balance, and stunning ash glazes that sought to idealize nature and the connection of people to the land. With his pieces very actively exhibited both in Japan and abroad, Yui has garnered much deserved attention and has already secured his family legacy for the current generation.

In excellent condition, this piece is 3.75 inches at its widest point (9.5cm) and stands 5.1 inches tall (13cm). It comes with an original wood box signed and sealed by the artist and with a decorative wrapping cloth.
