A harmonious blend of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary artistic expression, this extraordinary tea bowl encapsulates the essence of Oribe pottery while infusing it with a fresh and modern interpretation. The surface of the tea bowl (chawan) is adorned with a striking interplay of colors and textures. Vibrant and richly glazed, it displays a fusion of deep emerald greens, ferrous sumi blacks, and pearlescent whites. These glazes are skillfully applied to create captivating patterns and organic motifs, evoking a sense of nature's beauty.
Born in Tokyo in 1937, Takauchi got started in his career as a potter in the illustrious town of Mashiko, renowned for producing untold quantities of epic pottery and legions of masterful potters. First gaining wide recognition in the 70s for his offerings in the Japan Traditional Arts and Crafts Exhibition, he later went on to actively exhibit across Japan and also abroad, most notably participating in an event put on by the Alberts Museum in England in 1983 and as one of 100 artists selected for the international “Now“ exhibition in France in 1995. Takauchi gained a reputation as a cutting edge contemporary artist by blend traditional Japanese pottery techniques such as Oribe and Ki-Seto styles with his own unique perspective and innovative ideas. Taken on the whole, his pieces are characterized by rich glazes, combinations of intricate symbology, and hard edges incorporating various juxtapositions.
In perfect condition, this tea bowl is 5.3 inches at its widest point (13.4cm) and stands 3.8 inches tall (9.7cm). It comes with its original box signed and sealed by the artist and also includes a protective cloth also bearing Takauchi’s seal.
