Handwoven with delicate precision, this Japanese bamboo ikebana basket showcases the beauty of traditional bamboo weaving and the elegance of classic Chinese design that much of Japanese traditional art is based on. Its sturdy construction and balanced proportions make it perfect for ikebana arrangements, merging floral artistry with cultural aesthetics.
Though little is known about this artisan, I was able to find examples of their work in several high-end Japanese galleries. I was also able to find references to students who studied under this artist during the Showa period suggesting they were likely most active during late Meiji and Taisho. Every work I have seen suggests a high level of competence and artistic talent. Several works I encountered were held by well-known bamboo art collector Saito Masamitsu, who also apparently recognized the talent of this elusive artist.
In excellent condition, this bamboo basket is 26cm long by 21cm wide and stands 36cm tall. It comes in its original box signed and sealed by the artist. The box describes this piece as a “Karamono” or Chinese-style basket.
