In the tranquil pond, a solitary turtle finds repose upon a weathered rock. With its ancient shell glistening under the gentle sunlight, it sits in serene contemplation. The stillness of the water mirrors the turtle's quiet presence, as it basks in the harmony of its surroundings. In this harmonious scene, time seems to slow, and the turtle becomes a symbol of patience and tranquility amidst the ever-changing world.

Deep in the water
A serene heart resides
Floating above it
By the grace of the rock's shadow
The turtle finds tranquility

The painting of the turtle was done by Hara Zaichū (1750-1837); a renowned scholar, poet, and philosopher of the Edo period. Under the guidance of Motoori Norinaga, he delved into Kokugaku and developed a deep appreciation for Japanese literary traditions. Known for his poetry, Zaichū's works reflected nature, love, and the transient aspects of life. He was also a philosopher influenced by Confucianism, contemplating societal issues and advocating for reforms. With his multidisciplinary expertise and intellectual contributions, Zaichū left a lasting impact on Japanese intellectual traditions and continues to be celebrated for his literary and philosophical insights.

Meanwhile, the poem on this scroll is a work by Reizei Tamenori (1777-1848); a distinguished poet and scholar of the Edo period.
