Composed by one of the most well-regarded and important figures within the Kanō tradition of painting, here we see a whimsical rendition of tiger and cub prancing through the forest. With its beautiful and well-preserved silk brocade to highlight the scene, the overall composition radiates a feeling of lightness and playful curiosity.
Oldest son to Kanō Takanobu, Tanyu was appointed as the first designated painter to the Tokugawa Shogunate. An enthusiast for Chinese style paintings, Tanyu was known to have a large collection of such works that no doubt influenced his style as an artist. So large was his collection and so knowledgable was he regarding Chinese styles, over time he became an authenticator of such works. Though born in Kyoto, Tanyu was granted an estate in Edo in the Kajibashi district, whose name would later become associated with his branch of painters. Dividing his time between Edo and Kyoto, he is known to have completed a number of famous and enduring works for places such as Nijo Caste, the Imperial Palace, and the Shogun’s castle in Nagoya. Truly one of the most historically important painters within the Kanō tradition, today we remember him, along with his grandfather Eitoku and his great grandfather Motonobu as “”the three famous brushes” of Kanō painting.
Sumie ink on Japnanese silk (kenpon) with a silk brocade, this scroll is 130cm tall and 82cm wide. The artwork on the scroll is 72cm tall and 41cm wide and is signed by the artist (examples of Tanyu’s signature and seals available upon request). In very good condition with some wear consistent with age, this scroll comes with a certification box provided by Araki Tanrei (1857-1931), a painter and researcher who worked closely with Kanō School descendants to identify and preserve works by this painting tradition. Transcription and translation available upon purchase.
