With pottery shards from excavated kilns dating back to the 5th Century, Mino-ware is one of the oldest and most revered pottery traditions in all of Japan. Though the piece featured here does not fit neatly into any of the typical categories of Mino pottery such as Kiseto, Setoguro, Oribe, or Shino; the shape and overall feel seem to place it quire firmly within this pottery tradition.
Exceptionally well-proportioned and utterly unique, this tea bowl displays a dazzling cinnabar glaze with hints of feldspar and ferrous compounds making for a very engaging ceramic landscape. In darker lighting environments the glaze takes on a deep and rich luster while in bright natural light it appears more matte in texture. The angled surfaces and irregular dimensions are mesmerizing, epitomizing a Japanese aesthetic that places high value on irreproducibility and distinctive personality. Though the age is unknown, this piece would appear to be a product of the early-to-mid 20th century.
In excellent condition, this ceremonial tea bowl is 4.3 inches in diameter at its widest point (11cm), and stands 3.5 inches tall (9cm). It comes with a vintage wood box and with a beautiful silk cloth made from antique kimono fabric (not shown here but images available on request). Though the artist is unknown, the craftsmanship suggests a master potter of significant talent. *** International shipping and insurance included in the price.
