A Richo Era Kōrai Tea Bowl with Gold Repairs

Artist:
—
Era:
Muromachi
Price:
$3,750

At various times over the long history of tea practice in Japan, Korean-ware has come into high fashion and ships full of the finest ceramics from the neighboring country were brought to its shores. Such pieces have long been favored by learned cha-jin (tea people); and, older pieces such as this are quite prized today as relatively few from this era have survived in good condition. While it is possible this piece is of Japanese origin, its apparent age would make it more likely to have been imported many centuries ago. The tea bowl has extensive and expertly applied gold repairs, some from long ago and some appearing to be more recent. Overall, a magnificent collaboration between artistry, craftsmanship, and time.

In fine antique condition, this piece is 7 inches at its widest point (18cm) and stands 3.5 inches tall (9cm). As mentioned above it has extensive gold repairs from various time periods showing that it has been cared for and preserved for posterity. It comes with a recently fitted custom wood box. *** International shipping and insurance included in the price.
