A veteran of Bizen pottery, Mori Tōgaku has been perfecting his style for close to seven decades now with most of his important work having been done in the last 35 years. Using a self-built large climbing kiln measuring 53 meters—one of the largest of its kind—he utilizes a number of interesting techniques including mixing different types of clay into one work to produce pieces like the mizusashi (fresh water jar) shown here. With an unmatched ability to keep his designs fresh and interesting while utilizing the most traditional materials and methods, he has been awarded the title of Intangible Cultural Property by Okayama prefecture and his pieces are actively sought after today by galleries, collectors, tea practitioners, and museums worldwide.
In excellent condition, this fresh water basin for tea ceremony measures 6.6 inches wide (16.7cm) and stands 6.7 inches tall (17cm). Housed in its original box signed and sealed by the artist, in addition it comes wrapped in a protective silk cloth.
