One of the most prominent potters of the Meiji period and one of only five to ever be appointed as Imperial Court Artist, the name Tozan is synonymous with fine porcelains including: Kyo-style tea and sake-wares, pieces for the western export market, distinctively home-grown Japanese motifs, and expertly crafted Chinese-style pieces such as the one seen here.
Apprenticed to Kameya Kyokutei, Tozan (1846-1920) took it upon himself to visit many kilns and to gain technique and advice from a number of the greats of the time including 3rd generation Dohachi, Murata Kisui, and Kanzan Denshichi, to name a few. Today his pieces can be found in private collections and museums around the world including: the British Museum, the National Museum of Scotland, the Tokyo National Museum, and the Sumitomo Museum, to name a few.
In fine antique condition, this incense burner is 3.3 inches wide (8.3cm) and stands 2.2 inches tall (5.5cm). The original box (tomobako) has Tozan's unmistakeable red seal and the bottom of the koro is also impressed with his stamp. ** International shipping and insurance is included in the price
