This beautiful Red Raku tea bowl is the work of Raku XI Keinyu (1817-1902), the 11th Raku potter in an unbroken line of artisans stretching back over 450 years. Keinyu was adopted into the Raku family after marrying the daughter of the 10th Kichizaemon, thereupon becoming torchbearer for the most noted and celebrated tradition of pottery within the world of Japanese tea. One of Keinyu’s classic creations, this tea bowl highlights his honed sense of proportion, his versatility as a potter, and his ability to capture the forces of nature within a body of clay.

In images shown here, we see the classic configuration of boxes for well-documented Raku pieces known as a “Megane-bako” or, “glasses box” for its twin frames from which to authenticated the tea bowl. On the front left is the original box with signature and stamp on the inside cover. On the front right is a box carrying the endorsement of 12th generation Head Tea Master of Omotesenke, Sei-sai (1863 - 1937); fashioned some time in Meiji. To house the set of authentication boxes, a third larger box was custom made according to tradition. In excellent condition with no chips or cracks, this tea bowl is 12.5cm wide and stands 6cm tall. *** International shipping and insurance included in the price.
