A Celadon Vase by Inoue Ryosai III

Artist:
Inoue Ryosai III
Era:
Taishō
Price:
$1,750

A student of Itaya Hazan, one of the most sought after potters in the world of Japanese art, the ceramicist who crafted this fine vase displays here a high degree of mastery, both in form and glazing technique. For the collector who has always wanted a Hazan but has never been lucky enough to chance upon one, this may be a worthy acquisition. Although much of Inoue’s work is quite different in style to that of Hazan’s, you can find a number of pieces where the influence is unmistakeable—this is one such piece.

Inoue Ryosai III (1888-1971) was part of a generational potting family from Tokyo who had the extreme good future to study under legendary potter Itaya Hazan. At the age of 17 he took over the family business and later relocated the kiln to Yokohama after the Great Kanto Earthquake. A frequent contributor to prestigious exhibitions such as the Nitten, Bunten, and Teiten, Inoue won a number of awards during his career stretching nearly seven decades. Today pieces by this artist are held by the British Museum, the MET, The Walters Art Museum, and the Yokohama Museum of art, to name a few.

In excellent condition, this piece is 5.7 inches across (14.5 cm) and stands 12.8 inches tall (32.5 cm). It has Inoue’s stamp clearly impressed on the base and comes in its original box signed and sealed by the artist (examples of signature and seals available upon request).
