A Red Shino Bowl by Yasuo Tamaoki

Artist:
Yasuo Tamaoki
Era:
Shōwa
Price:
SOLD

A powerful work of Shino pottery by one of the veterans of Mino ceramics. Vibrant lines of white feldspar contrast sharply with the iron rich clay and glaze to bring out this abstract depiction of field grasses swaying in the breeze. The technique used to produce this work is over 400 years old and was nearly lost to the ages before being revived by several well-known artists in the mid-20th century.

Born in 1941 in Taijima, Tamaoki began his studies at a very early age; apprenticing for a time under Kato Kohei V before eventually opening his own kiln. He exhibited widely, entering his pieces in competition whenever the opportunity arose and, as a result, he has a list of awards to his name at top competitions and was eventually named an Intangible Culture Asset of Taijimi City in 1991. An overview of his body of work shows Tamaoki’s unmatched ability to drive his craft forward by innovating on tradition while, at the same time, being able to produce works indistinguishable from those produced hundreds of years prior.

In excellent condition this piece is 6.3 inches in diameter at its widest point (16 cm), and stands 4.3 inches tall (11 cm). It comes with its original wood box signed by the artist (tomobako), a protective cloth, and bears Tamaoki’s signature on the base (examples of signature and seals available upon request).

**** International shipping and insurance included in the price.
