This lovely Shino tea bowl from the Edo period is fashioned from coarse Mino clay and is covered in feldspar glazing. As with many pieces of this period and style, it has classic abstract painting across the sides created using ferrous pigment—contrasting nicely with the ivory background. Not only does this piece have a lovely wabi feel to it bestowed by age; it also has several exquisite gold repairs that contrast nicely with the soft patina and the crackled glazing.

Shino-ware dates to the Momoyama period when potters were attempting to recreate white porcelain-wares that were being imported from China at the time. Originally they were made in single-chamber anagama style kilns set into the hillsides. Later, with the advent of large-batch noborigama, shino production fell out of fashion and was replaced largely by Oribe (early Edo period). It was not until the early-20th century that famed potter Arakawa Toyozo brought Shino back from the brink with his research into Momoyama period kilns. For Arakawa, as well as other potters to follow, Shino-ware held a special appeal as it was the only form of white pottery that could truly be said to have originated in Japan. They deeply admired the feldspar glazing, naturalistic form, excellent firing techniques, exceptional clay flavor, and brilliant fire colors that were so characteristic of the lost art of Shino-ware.

In fine antique condition with several gold repairs along the sides of the vessel, this piece is 5 inches (12.6 cm) in diameter and stands 3.2 inches (8.2 cm) tall. It comes with an old kiri-wood box, a silk lining to the box fashioned from antique kimono, and a protective cloth that shows some age and character. *** International shipping and insurance included in the price
