A Red Shino Tea Bowl by Takauchi Shugo

Artist:
Takauchi Shugo
Era:
Contemporary
Price:

Decidedly masculine in character with straight sculpted edges, a rich palette of color, and a calm steadiness in the hand; this tea bowl was crafted by one of Japan’s great masters, a Mashiko potter by the name of Takauchi Shugo.

A native of Tokyo, Takauchi (b. 1937) took the well-established path of working for a company after graduating from university and it was not until a number of years later—upon visiting the town of Mashiko and being inspired by the works of artists such as Hamada Shoji—that he decided to jump ship and instead pursue the life of a potter. Establishing his first kiln in 1968, Takauchi set about producing works of Shino, Oribe, and Seto which he actively exhibited and entered in competition both in Japan and abroad. Due to his passion for the art and consistency in producing outstanding pieces, he gained a dedicated following that continues to this day—a favorite of collectors and tea people alike.

In excellent condition this piece is 5.7 inches in diameter at its widest point (14.5 cm), and stands 3.4 inches tall (8.5 cm). It comes with its original wood box signed by the artist (tomobako). *** International shipping and insurance included in the price.
