Not so often in the world of Japanese tea-ware do you come across something so exquisitely novel that it resists categorization in terms traditional styles. This tea bowl by young artist Suzuki Taku is one such piece with a unique glazing technique known as “kuro-sabi,” which roughly translates into English as “black oxidation coloring.” Utilizing a process where sections of the copper glazed vessel are treated with sulfuric acid, the result is a dazzling and varied palette of rich metallic coloring. This tea bowl is part of a limited series that is no longer in production—making it the rarest of the rare.

A native of Saitama prefecture, Suzuki Taku (b. 1977) initially set out on a path to be an architect, completing his studies in 2004. However, in the process of modeling 3D structures, he inadvertently stumbled upon his true calling—a career in the ceramic arts. Since then, Suzuki has very actively exhibited his creations and has won several awards in competition. Owing to the fact that he was not brought up through the traditional system of apprenticeship, his body of varied and exceptionally competent works tend to stray from the norm in unexpected and delightful ways. According to Suzuki: “… though I am not consciously aware of it, my training as an architect causes me to first consider things in three dimensional space. While shaping a piece, keeping in mind the unique features of the clay, I try to never miss an opportunity to bring out the beauty in every curve.”

In excellent condition this piece is 4.8 inches in diameter at its widest point (12.2 cm), and stands 3.2 inches tall (8.1 cm). It comes with its original wood box signed by the artist (tomobako), a protective cloth, and an informational insert in Japanese detailing the kiln and artist. *** International shipping and insurance included in the price.
