The colors seen in this ceramic piece are not often encountered in the world of Japanese tea-ware pottery—a field dominated mainly by styles such as Raku, Hagi, and other traditions with relatively conservative and predictable color schemes. The aquamarine blue is rather striking, reminiscent of coral encountered in the pristine waters of tropical and remote destinations. What really makes this extraordinary however, is that this piece relies mainly on kiln conditions and a natural ash glaze to achieve this look.
The artisan who crafted this tea bowl is Sakuchi Ensen (b. 1922) took up the craft from his father and the age of 24 with the intention of innovating on traditional ceramics from his native Okayama. What he came up with was an innovative technique for producing works such as the one seen here. He dubbed this style “Hishoku” (secret color) “Nanban-yaki” (Nanban-ware).
This piece is 5 inches in diameter (12cm) and stands 3.2 inches tall (8cm). It bears the artists signature next to the pedestal ring and comes with a signed wood tomobako. The bowl is in excellent condition, comes with a protective cloth, and also with an informative insert detailing the artist and kiln. *** International shipping & insurance included.
