An antique cha-ire with unique glazing

Artist:

Era:
Edo

This extraordinary cha-ire (powdered tea container) displays an excellent glaze that appears to have only grown more intricate and rich with time. Contrasting against a reddish brown background are flows and pools of darker glaze along with lighter textured speckles. On the base is a stamp indicating that this piece is a type of Shidoru-yaki and the overall appearance shows quite some age.

Shidoro-yaki is a type of Mino-ware that has a long history stretching back as far as the Muromachi era. It gained popularity in early Edo when Tokugawa anointed it with a special stamp and promoted its use. Shidoru pottery tends to come in yellow, black, and a fine reddish-brown glaze as the one seen here. The pottery is known for being very resilient over time and is some of the highest quality Mino-ware ever produced.

In fine antique condition, this piece is 3.4 inches in diameter (8.5 cm) and stands 2.8 inches tall (7.2 cm). It comes with a wood box with a label reading “cha-ire/ Shidoru-yaki” and its own decorative silk pouch.
