One of the more innovative and international minded ceramicists on the Japanese pottery scene, Ryoji Koie’s interests and expertise cannot be confined to one narrow genre—as he often integrates non-traditional methods and materials. Born in the town of Tokonmae in 1938, from a young age he studied potting—a staple of the local economy—and later went on to do independent research, open his own kiln, travel widely participating in international conferences and workshops, and finally to become a professor in 1992. Author of several books and winner of numerous awards, his avant-garde style, political outspokenness, and spirit of innovation have made his works highly sought after and prized by collectors around the world.
In excellent condition, this piece is 5.3 inches (13.4 cm) in diameter and stands 3.6 inches (9.2 cm) tall. Koie’s signature can be seen in the form of ornamental etchings on the side. It comes with an original wood box signed and sealed by the artist and with a protective cloth. ** International shipping and insurance included in the price
