Hagi “Kujaku” Tea Bowl with Wari-kodai by Yamane Seigen

Era:

Ripples of light and dark pigmentation flowing on a background of sky-blue glaze—the description on the box reads 萩孔雀 (Hagi kujyaku) translating as “peacock Hagi” in English. With a distinctive wari-kodai (segmented foot) and unique glaze emulating the vibrant plumage of the notoriously flamboyant bird, this piece leaves a lasting impression.

Born in the illustrious potting town of Hagi, Yamane began his potter’s journey at the age of 35. Unlike many ceramicists who begin to learn the craft from a young age, Yamane first spent a number of years as a student ,and then teacher, of the well-known Japanese art of Karate. Yamane describes his first encounter with the potter’s studio as “soul awakening” and talks about how he discovered many parallels with the martial art he had devoted his younger years to. Specifically, he points to how in Karate, one goal is to make oneself empty in order to allow various energies to flow freely into the body. In the same way he notes how the creation of empty vessels on a potter’s wheel creates a similar type of “vacuum”—full of potential for events to unfold.

In excellent condition, this piece is 5.5 inches in diameter (14 cm) and stands 4 inches tall (10 cm). It comes with its original signed and stamped original box (tomobako).
