Appearing to capture an ocean inside a tea bowl, this particular work has been given the very fitting poetic name “Nami” or wave. Masterfully crafted by veteran potter Hideo Torazawa, the inside is painted with a special glaze known as heki-yu—prized for its pure aquamarine character with accents of sapphire and azure depending on the light.
Born in Gifu prefecture in 1935, Hideo Torazawa has enjoyed a long and productive career as a potter and has mastered a number of difficult styles including green-ware, white porcelain, Shino, Raku, Oribe, and various forms of Sometsuke. In 1975 he opened a kiln in Saitama and revived a style of pottery that died out 100 years earlier in Meiji known as “Honno-yaki”—named for the town where his kiln is located. Widely exhibited in Japan, Torazawa has also displayed his pieces abroad in New Zealand and Italy, winning a gold medal in 1993 at an International ceramics exhibition in Faenza.
In excellent condition, this piece is 6 inches in diameter (15 cm) and stands 2.75 inches tall (7 cm). It comes with its original signed and stamped tomobako, a protective cloth with Torazawa’s seal, and an insert detailing the kiln and his career.
