An Iga “Torigata” Vase - Furutani Michio (1946-2000)

Artist:
Furutani Michio
Era:
Contemporary
Price:
$1,500

In excellent condition, this bird-shaped, or “torigata” vase is a beautiful example of Iga pottery from last century. A master of form, material, and technique, the potter Furutani Michio (1946-2000) wrote several books later translated to English on the construction and use of the “anagama”—an earth-dug, wood-fired, small-batch kiln traditionally used in Japan—celebrated for the extraordinary results that often emerge from its fires. Winner of a number of awards during his lifetime including Grand Prizes at the Shigaraki Ceramic Arts Exhibition and the Seibu Art Crafts Grand Prize Exhibition, Furutani was supremely dedicated to the advancement of his craft.

This one-of-a-kind piece is 5.6 inches at its widest point (14.3cm), and stands 8.7 inches tall (22cm). Housed in its original box, Furutani's signature can be seen etched into the rich Iga clay on the bottom of the vessel.

*** International shipping and insurance are included in the price.
